Moeded: Real Limewash Paint or Just a Hardware Store Imitation?

Moeded : vraie peinture Limewash ou simple imitation en quincaillerie?

Moeded Lime Paint: Should We Really Be Excited About This New Hardware Product?

Recently, a new brand of limewash paint from Los Angeles has hit hardware stores: Moeded. Presented as a limewash paint accessible to the general public, it seems to promise a natural, patinated effect, in keeping with the trend for textured Mediterranean walls. But what is this product really worth? Is it real limewash paint or simply a well-marketed imitation?

At Domeco, we work with real natural mineral materials every day, and we help you differentiate between an effect product and a substantive one. Here's our artisan perspective on Moeded paint.

Lime paint… really?

It's hard to find the exact composition of Moeded paint. No ingredients are listed on their public technical data sheet. And that's already a warning sign . A true lime paint is proud of its composition: natural lime, water, mineral pigments, natural additives... period.

When the ingredients are not clear, one can legitimately ask:

  • Is the base really mineral?
  • Are there any synthetic binders?
  • Is the finish breathable, or just decorative?

A more cumbersome (and more expensive) application process

Unlike natural lime products like the ones we use (e.g., Graphenstone), Moeded requires a specific brand primer before application, regardless of the surface. And once the paint is applied? You also need to add a sealant to "fix" the result.

What it means:

  • More products to buy
  • More steps
  • More time
  • A less organic finish, often more “closed” and plastic to the touch

In contrast, the authentic lime paints we apply (and teach how to apply) do not require a sealer on decorative interior walls, nor a chemical primer. It is the material itself that breathes, lives, and sets naturally.

The question of pigments: natural or synthetic?

Moeded boasts that it's compatible with hardware store coloring systems. On paper, that sounds convenient. But in practice? It means you're coloring the paint with synthetic dyes, the same ones used for acrylic paint.

Result: we lose the mineral effect, the depth of the natural pigments, the soul of the whitewash.

At Domeco, our colors are created with carefully selected natural pigments. This is what gives each wall that unique vibrancy, that vibrant, nuanced effect that copies can never replicate.

Beware of “fake lime wash”

The market is now full of paints that mimic the "lime" effect without actually being lime. This is what's called "faux lime wash": acrylic or vinyl paints to which a texture or wiping technique is added to create the illusion of lime.

The dangers?

  • Superficial result
  • Less durable over time
  • Not breathable (risk of blisters, mold on certain walls)
  • Artificial look, without the patina of real whitewash

In short: just because a product “looks” like lime doesn’t mean it is. And that’s where Domeco makes all the difference: we work with real lime plasters and whitewashes , train enthusiasts to use them, and guide you towards a sustainable, healthy, and elegant aesthetic.

In conclusion: Moeded, good idea?

Yes, yes…

  • You want a mainstream alternative for a temporary project.
  • You're not looking for authenticity, but for an inspirational look.
  • You want a trendy design without a long-term, sustainable look.

No, if…

  • You are looking for a real mineral paint, ecological and breathable.
  • You value craftsmanship, sustainability and organic beauty.
  • You want a product that is consistent with a healthy and natural approach.

At Domeco, we firmly believe that beauty comes from the material , not from marketing.

And that's why we stay true to natural lime, its deep textures, its authentic hues—and the art of laying it with intention.
