Painting & Coatings
Where does lime come from?
Lime is an ancestral ecological material that has been used since ancient times. It is also found in many Pyramids of ancient Egypt as well as in the dome of the Parthenon in Rome, demonstrating the durability of this material. The basic ingredients of lime plaster or paint are simple, natural and remain unchanged until today: lime (obtained by the calcination of limestone), water and pigments derived from minerals or earth oxides.
Why choose lime plaster rather than polished concrete or micro cement?
Firstly, the permeability coefficient of lime plasters is three times higher than that of cement, which is the main ingredient in polished concrete or micro-cement. Lime-based plasters are therefore more breathable, eliminating problems linked to water condensation, humidity and, ultimately, mold. In addition, it is permeable to water vapor, but impermeable to water. Another advantage? Unlike concrete or cement, lime plaster has a property of malleability, both in elasticity and in resistance. This reduces the risk of cracking. It also keeps longer since when the lid is tightly closed, the coating can remain intact for years. So you don't have a limited time to do your work.
When looking at the ecological impact of both materials, the advantages of lime are undeniable. Thus, each year, the production of cement, a key ingredient in concrete, generates 7% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. For comparison, the airline industry is responsible for 1.5% of global CO2 emissions. Additionally, microcement contains harmful additives such as polymer resin or glycol ether. The latter belongs to a family of chemicals of which there are more than 80 derivatives. Due to their toxicity, they are prohibited in commonly used products, but they remain widely used in the composition of polished concrete coatings.
What are the benefits of lime paint?
Lime paint creates a matte, breathable finish that seeps into the wall surface, instead of forming a layer like conventional paints. As it dries, the lime undergoes a chemical reaction with carbon dioxide in the air, transforming into calcium carbonate and forming a durable, weather-resistant coating.
Can lime plaster go with all styles of decoration?
Absolutely. Its subtle, earthy tones complement a variety of styles, from modern and minimalist to traditional farmhouse or even boho chic. It is also perfect for accenting an architectural feature such as a fireplace, column or arch. And the great advantage of lime is that it has gone through history and all the different fashions really demonstrating its timeless character, but also its durability. Thus, it is a truly winning choice for any interior.
Would I be able to take on a renovation project after taking the workshop or online course? Or would it be better to use your services?
This depends on your manual skills. So, if you are someone who rarely does renovation projects, it is probably best to come take the workshop in person to see if this type of project could be within your reach. If, on the other hand, you are comfortable and you are someone who does a lot of renovations at home, the online courses could be more than enough to give you all the techniques necessary for your project. Another factor to take into account is the size of the project. Thus, for large-scale projects (for example, a staircase or an open space room) or for centerpieces (for example a kitchen counter), it might be preferable to trust our team since mistakes can be costly in time and money.
In several years, can we renovate a surface that is currently made of lime plaster or paint?
Whether it is decorative coating or lime paint with a limewash effect, the support on which the material is applied will become textured, creating relief on your surface. To repaint the surface with standard acrylic paint, we advise you to sand or sand to remove irregularities, and then apply an undercoat of paint primer.
Can it be applied by oneself?
Yes, with training and preparation. However, gestures strongly influence the
finish. A trained applicator ensures a controlled and lasting result.
Why does lime create different shades?
Lime is a living material that reacts to light, humidity, and the
application gestures, creating natural depth and movement.
