A meeting of neuroscience and design

Neuroarchitecture emerged from the convergence of two disciplines:

  • neuroscience, which studies how the brain works;
  • architecture and design, which shape our daily environment.

Today, research shows that our brain constantly analyzes information from our environment.

A very simple question

How does a space influence the brain, body, and emotions of those who inhabit it?

Even before we are aware of it, our nervous system interprets all the information from a place and adjusts our physiological state.

A space can soothe. Or keep the body in a state of alert.

Spaces are never neutral.

They influence your mood.
Your energy level.
Your concentration.
Your sleep.
Your ability to recover, create, learn, or simply feel good.

For a long time, architecture has sought to meet three objectives: to be functional, durable, and aesthetic.

Neuroarchitecture adds a new dimension, the one that matters most in daily life: the human experience.

Much more than a question of aesthetics

Two beautiful places can produce opposite experiences. One relaxes you the moment you enter. The other exhausts you without you being able to explain why.

The difference is not just in appearance. It lies in how the place communicates with your brain. Neuroarchitecture seeks to understand this silent language and put it at the service of the person inhabiting the space.

What your brain is primarily looking for

A. The neocortex (logic brain)
For decades, the majority of architecture has been designed to satisfy this part of the brain: functionality, standards, performance, budget, circulation, aesthetics, and efficiency.

These elements are essential… but they represent only a part of the human experience.

B. The limbic (emotion brain)
It is what gives emotional meaning to places.

It influences the feeling of comfort, belonging, inspiration, or appeasement that a space can evoke. Materials, colors, light, proportions, and memories associated with a place are interpreted here.

C. The reptilian (survival instinct brain)
This is the oldest part of the brain.

Even before we analyze a space, it unconsciously checks whether it is safe. Shapes, visibility, shelters, natural light, perspectives, and our connection to living things directly influence this feeling.

When this brain is reassured, the body naturally lowers its level of vigilance, promoting relaxation, recovery, and well-being.

The majority of projects are designed to satisfy the neocortex: the part that appreciates proportions, style, materials, trends, and visual coherence.

But our brain doesn't stop there.

For a space to be truly beneficial, it must also appeal to the emotional brain, unique to each individual, as well as the instinctive brain, which primarily seeks to feel safe.

This difference is what distinguishes simply beautiful architecture from architecture that is felt:

  • Do I have good visibility of my surroundings?
  • Is the light pleasant?
  • Can I easily find my way around?
  • Is the noise or stimulation excessive?
  • Do I have contact with nature?
  • Does this place allow me to lower my guard?

When these needs are met, the brain expends less energy staying alert. It becomes available for creativity, concentration, exchanges, learning, and rest.

A. Neocortex (logic) Analyze the project's aesthetics, organization, functionality, and coherence. We create elegant, timeless, and technically coherent spaces where materials, proportions, and light meet the highest design standards.
B. Limbic system (emotions) Associate a place with emotions, memories, and a sense of belonging. Each person experiences it differently. Every project begins with an in-depth questionnaire about the future occupants' lifestyles, needs, background, and sensitivities. We then design an environment tailored to them, rather than a universal design.
C. Reptilian (survival) Unconsciously assesses if the environment is safe and allows the body to lower its guard. We integrate neuro-architecture principles: visibility, refuges, connection to nature, light, natural materials, acoustics, and spatial perception so that the body can naturally regain a state of calm.

A design guided by three dimensions of human experience.

Our design approach brings together what are often seen as opposites: instinct, emotion, and reason.

Each project is developed to create a balance between the fundamental need for security, the emotional dimension unique to each individual, and the functional requirements of a well-designed space. It is at this intersection that the most sustainable environments are born – those that are not just beautiful to look at, but deeply right to inhabit.

Why is that important today?

We now spend nearly 90% of our time indoors.

Our homes, our workplaces, our cars, shops, and places we visit.

Yet, most of these spaces were designed primarily to meet technical, budgetary, or aesthetic constraints.

Very rarely were they designed with the functioning of the human brain in mind.

Neuro-architecture thus offers a new way of designing our spaces:

not only so that they are harmonious, but also so that they take care of the people who inhabit them.
